9 Tips To Say NO To Hair Breakage

It is normal to lose up to 100 strands of hair a day, but many of us are probably losing much more than that due to breakage. It’s a good thing that this unwanted breakage can be easily avoided by simply breaking a few bad hair habits.

Stop Pulling. Are you a hair twirler? Do you like to run your hands through your hair multiple times a day? If so, time to break that habit. Constantly playing with your hair pulls on your delicate strands, which is a huge reason you may be experiencing unwanted breakage.

Take Your Hair Down. Every now and then you might find it easiest to throw your hair up in a ponytail, but if you do it too much, that constant pulling and tugging will cause stress on your tresses- which leads to breakage.

Style Dry. Most people, myself included, hop right out of the shower and head straight to the brush. You want to detangle your wet mop, yet it is actually better to do so with your fingers. A brush on wet hair will cause your strands to snap almost immediately.

Put Down the Flat Iron. The overuse of heat on your hair is a big no-no, but you probably already know that. The heat not only causes damage, but dryness too, and dry hair is much more prone to breaking. If you absolutely must straighten your unruly locks, be sure to use a heat protectant and turn down the heat as much as you can.

Get a Trim (every now & then). If you don’t keep up with trimming your split ends, they will only continue to split until they break off completely. Get a standing appointment at your hairdresser, and keep it.

Eat More Protein. If your diet is lacking protein, your hair will be sure to tell you. Protein gives your hair the strength it needs to avoid breaking. Remember, everything in moderation. Too much protein will actually make your hair brittle.

Ditch the Dye. Dying your hair, especially if you lighten it, will make your hair very weak and brittle- which is what causes breakage. If you must touch up your roots on the regular, be sure to deep condition your dried out ‘do at least once a week.

Sleep on Silk. I don’t know about you guys, but when I wake up every morning my hair resembles that of Medusa. If you’re a crazy sleeper like myself, sleep on a silk pillowcase. As you move your head in your sleep, the friction against your cotton pillow will cause breakage in the back of your head.

Swap out Your Towel. Terry cloth towels have the same effect as cotton pillowcases, when you rub your wet hair with a terry towel, the friction will cause breakage. Instead use a mircrofiber towel and gently pat your hair dry.
